An upcoming reboot for "Roswell" is happening on The CW. The network has announced that it has ordered a pilot for the new iteration of the sci-fi series, which starred Katherine Heigl, Shiri Appleby and Jason Behr among others.
The new project, which is still untitled, is set to follow the daughter of undocumented immigrants who reluctantly returns to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico. There she discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he's an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life.
She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.
Just like the original series, which ran from 1999 until 2002, the reboot will also be based on the "Roswell High" book series written by Melinda Metz. Carina Adly MacKenzie ("The Originals") is set to write the script while serving as executive producer alongside Lawrence Bender and Kevin Brown. Also executive producing the project are Justin Falvey and Darrul Frank of Amblin Television.
In addition to the "Roswell" reboot, The CW orders five more drama pilots. They include a high school football drama titled "Spencer" which hails from Greg Berlanti. Inspired by the life of pro football player Spencer Paysinger, the drama follows a rising high school football player from South Central L.A. who is recruited to play for Beverly Hills High.
Berlanti and Sarah Schechter executive produce the series with a script written by April Blair. Robbie Rogers will produce with Dane Morck consulting. "Spencer" is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Other dramas which the pilot is ordered are thriller series "In the Dark" which has Ben Stiller serving as executive producer, "The End of the World as We Know It" which is based on the book of the same name by Iva-Marie Palmer, and "Skinny Dip" which is based on the novel of the same name by Carl Hiaasen. The CW also orders a pilot for a drama titled "Playing Dead", which follows a mortician and his son whose lives are turned upside down when the woman who abandoned them 15 years ago returns and asks them to fake her death.
