One of the photos shows Rick and Michonne taking Carl out of a burning house after the explosive midseason finale, but will he survive?

AceShowbiz - "The Walking Dead" midseason finale featured a big twist that pretty much sealed the fate of a major character. While the character's exit has been confirmed, new photos from the upcoming midseason premiere may reveal the character's last moments.

Released via Entertainment Weekly, one of the pictures shows Carl (Chandler Riggs) being carried out of a burning house by Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). Alexandria was blown up in the midseason finale, but what's more upsetting is that Carl was revealed to have been bitten by a walker.

The son of Rick, however, is still clinging to life in the new episode as he's featured lying down in bed with his father and Michonne looking after him. Another image sees him writing on a journal, but it seems to be a flashback scene since he sits comfortably in a house in Alexandria.

In another still, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) looks pensive while in a room with baby Grace. Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) appears to try to make his way through the swamp in another photo, while Carol (Melissa McBride) and Morgan (Lennie James) look like they are sneaking. There's also a look at Ezekiel (Khary Payton) as Negan's prisoner.

Chandler Riggs tells EW how his character's departure will affect the show. "He's definitely leaving behind a really long-lasting legacy," he says, "which was the coolest part about playing those final moments - knowing that Carl was going to have such a lasting impact on the story." Showrunner Scott M. Gimple chimes in, "Carl's presence is felt very deeply throughout the story. It's a critical aspect of the season."

As to how Rick will handle this, Andrew Lincoln says, "The back half [of the season] is him trying to live through the unbelievable pain, in the middle of a war, and trying to reconcile this loss with what he's fighting for. This is his worst nightmare being realized."

"The Walking Dead' returns with the second half of season 8 on Sunday, February 25 at 9 P.M. on AMC.
