Warner Bros. has shortlisted potential directors to helm the upcoming "The Flash". According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Zemeckis ("Back to the Future"), Matthew Vaughn ("Kingsman: The Secret Service" and "Kingsman: The Golden Circle") and Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man") have met with the studio in recent weeks and become the strong contenders for the competition.

Variety reports that Zemeckis and Vaughn "have always been the leading candidates, though each has his own hurdle to overcome to land the job." Zemeckis is currently focusing on his Steve Carell-starring untitled Universal film, which is set to begin filming in August. Vaughn, meanwhile, has a plan to make "Kingsman 3" following the release of "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" this fall.

Since director Rick Famuyiwa exited the project, "The Flash" production has been put on hold. In addition, Ezra Miller, who will portray the Scarlet Speedster in the movie, will soon be busy filming "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2". Warner Bros. decided to work on a new script while also searching for Famuyiwa's replacement.

"The Flash" new draft is written by Joby Harold, who wrote "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword". Meanwhile, Kiersey Clemons will play Barry Allen's love interest Iris West and Billy Crudup will portray Barry Allen's father.

Vaughn is no stranger to directing comic book movies. He helmed "X-Men: First Class", "Kick-Ass", "Kingsman: The Secret Service" as well as its sequel. Zemeckis is well-known for directing "Back to the Future" franchise and last directed Brad Pitt-starring "Allied". Raimi worked on Tobey Maguire-starring "Spider-Man" trilogy in 2000s. His last directorial feature film project was "Oz the Great and Powerful", which starred James Franco.
