Mark Gatiss hits back at viewers and critics who complain that the new instalment is too confusing, saying that the show is indeed supposed to challenge the audience.

AceShowbiz - While the new season of "Sherlock" had been eagerly anticipated by fans, not all of them are pleased with the direction taken in the fourth season. Many viewers and critics complained that the show's too hard to follow due to its deftly-timed plot twists and turns.

Co-creator Mark Gatiss has now come to the show's defense, claiming that the show's supposed to challenge its viewers. "People ask if it's good to challenge the audience. Of course it f***ing is. Why would you not want to challenge your audience?" he tells The Daily Star.

The writer, who also plays Sherlock's older brother Mycroft Holmes on the series, adds, "I did a phone-in after the Christmas special a few years ago and someone said it was too complicated for people to follow. I said 'oh, go and pour some warm paste into your mouth.' If you don't want to be challenged, don't watch it. It's a complex and entertaining programme."

To those who complained that the show's too complicated, he says, "Go and read a children's book with hard pages if you don't want to be challenged. We're making the show we want to make. We don't make it a certain way because fans are pressuring us."

"Sherlock" season 4 is full of twists and shocks, [SPOILER ALERT!] with the arrival of Sherlock's sister Eurus (Sian Brooke) and the death of Mary Watson (Amanda Abbington). It reached the climax in the season finale, where Sherlock's arch-nemesis Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) made his long-rumored return.

But Moriarty's not alive since he appeared in flashback sequence. "Can we point something out? In total fairness, we didn't lie, he's really dead, gone," co-creator Steve Moffat said during a screening of "The Final Problem" in London on Thursday, January 12.

Asked whether this would be the end of "Sherlock", Moffat said, "If this is the last time - and I'm not planning on it to be, but it might be - it is possible that we could end it" with this episode. "We couldn't have ended it on any of the previous series because there was what have been great cliffhangers." Gatiss added, "It may be the final problem, you never know."

The season finale once again gets mixed reviews from fans, as shown in the comments on the post shared by BBC One after the last episode aired.
