Golden Globes 2016: Kate Winslet and Rachel Bloom Are Among Early Winners

Winslet wins Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in 'Steve Jobs', while Bloom is named Best TV Series Actress in Comedy or Musical for her role on 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'.

AceShowbiz - The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards has officially begun. Host Ricky Gervais kicked off the show on Sunday night, January 10 with a monologue in which he tackled equal pay, Caitlyn Jenner and gender equality among other issues.

Following the opening monologue, the first award which was for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture was announced. Kate Winslet nabbed the gong for her portrayal of Joanna Hoffman in "Steve Jobs", beating out the likes of Jane Fonda ("Youth"), Jennifer Jason Leigh ("The Hateful Eight"), Helen Mirren ("Trumbo") and Alicia Vikander ("Ex Machina").

Being humble, the Academy Award-winning actress said, "I really actually am extremely surprised and overwhelmed." She went on acknowledging women's achievement in film as saying, "What an incredible year for women in film."

Backstage, Winslet told the press, "I'm still standing here and I keep thinking maybe this is not happening. I honestly, truthfully did not expect this at all and I'm so delighted. I'm so thrilled. I really can't believe it. It's incredible. It's such an honor. Really it is."

The second award to be announced that night was for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Movie, Series, or Miniseries which went to Maura Tierney for her role on "The Affair". "I'm so glad to be a part [of such excellent work]," she said in her acceptance speech. "Thanks to my family, my mom and dad."

Rachel Bloom was the next actress to be honored that night, winning Best TV Series Actress in Comedy or Musical for her role on "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend". Accepting the award onstage, she revealed that the show almost didn't get picked up. "Guys, guys, guys, I'm gonna talk to you as people ... we almost didn't have a show," she said. She added backstage, "This is a dream come true."

Bloom edged out strong contenders including Jamie Lee Curtis ("Scream Queens"), Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Veep"), Gina Rodriguez ("Jane the Virgin") and Lily Tomlin ("Grace and Frankie").

More winners will be announced next as the show is currently airing live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
