"Mortal Kombat" was a 1995's smash hit as it was successful to secure the first position at the box office. The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed some facts from the movie which were obtained by interviewing many of the movie's crew and cast. One of the major revelations was that Cameron Diaz almost played a particular character in the movie, but it ended up being played by another actress.

When the subject of putting together the cast was brought up, producer Lauri Apelian shared a never-before-heard story. "We originally had Cameron Diaz cast as Sonya Blade. We were at New Line when 'The Mask' was in post production, and Cameron Diaz was not a household name. No one knew her," he said.

Apelian and the studio wanted to search for a fresh talented actress rather than picking the already-famous one. "New Line said, 'Why don't you look some of the dailies that are coming in from this film and see what you think of this young, unknown actress.' As soon as we saw the dailies from 'The Mask', there was no question that she was a star," he recalled.

The producer later continued to reveal that they had put Diaz in the role, but an accident forced them to give up the role to Bridgette Wilson-Sampras. "We put her into training, because she had not really done this kind of martial arts work before. She broke her wrist right before shooting to the point where she couldn't do the martial arts stunts we needed. We were very happy with Bridgette. It was great she was available," he explained.

Earlier this month, The Tracking Board brought words that the long-in-development "Mortal Kombat" remake seems to be moving forward with James Wan in talks to produce the movie. The script is written by "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" writer Oren Uziel and "The Expendables" writer Dave Callaham.
