GLAAD confirms to have chosen Kerry Washington as the next recipient of its Vanguard Award, crediting her for her work in promoting equality. The 38-year-old star thus joins previous honorees which include Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Theron, Drew Barrymore, Antonio Banderas, Janet Jackson, and Kristin Chenoweth.
"Throughout her illustrious career, Kerry Washington has consistently brought life to characters that encourage acceptance of LGBT people," GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis explained why Washington was chosen as the award recipient. "Her outspoken support for equality, both here at home and abroad, has sent messages of hope and empowerment to fans all over the world, fostering dialogue that builds understanding and helps move hearts and minds."
The organization, moreover, credits Washington for becoming the first African American woman to a headline a network TV drama since 1974 with her starring role as Olivia Pope on the LGBT-inclusive show "Scandal." Besides, she has "tirelessly" spoken out in support of full equality for LGBT people and participated in GLAAD's annual anti-bullying campaign, Spirit Day.
