Moviegoers are so excited to watch "Fifty Shades of Grey". Advance ticket selling for the movie, which is based on an erotic novel of the same name by E.L. James, opened on Sunday, January 11 and it already became the fastest-selling R-rated title in Fandango history, the outlet said on Friday.
The highly-anticipated movie starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson outperformed the likes of "Sex and the City 2", "The Hangover: Part II", "The Hangover: Part III" and "Gone Girl" in the first week of advance sales. It also recorded the biggest ticket sales for non-sequel since "The Hunger Games" which was released in 2012.
Fandango chief correspondent Dave Karger has commented on "Fifty Shades" ticket sales. "Very few books can claim true national phenomenon status - and 'Fifty Shades' ranks with 'Twilight', 'The Hunger Games' and 'Gone Girl' as novels that entered the zeitgeist from coast to coast," he was quoted as saying. "Fans of the book have been waiting for years to see their favorite sexy characters come to life on the big screen, and they are clearly fueling our sensational advance sales."
"Fifty Shades" is hitting U.S. theaters on February 13, just in time for Valentine's Day. In addition to Dornan and Johnson, the Sam Taylor-Wood-directed movie stars Rita Ora and Luke Grimes among others.
