John Mellencamp has broken his silence on his split from Meg Ryan. In an interview on SiriusXM's "The Howard Stern Show", the "Paper in Fire" singer said of his ex, "Meg is an angel. She was just an angel sent to me at the right time."
John, who lived in Indiana, seemingly admitted that distance was the main reason for his split from Meg, who lived in New York. "We tried to have a relationship for three years-long distance," the "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." singer shared, "We'll see what happens."
John also talked about his fellow rocker, Neil Young, who recently got divorced from his wife of 36 years, Pegi Morton. "I was just with Neil and I was teasing him at Farm Aid a couple weeks ago all day about getting a divorce."
He continued, " 'After 36 years, Neil! How do you get a divorce after 36 years?' Then he says, 'Oh, I'm very happy.' Then I find out two days later he's dating Daryl Hannah. I go, I bet you are happy, Neil! He didn't seem as sad as I thought he would."
When asked about his three failed marriages, John said, "[They] always started out good. You have the laughter and then you have the tears."
John and Meg, who began dating in early 2011, broke up in August. At that time, a source told PEOPLE, "It was the distance. She lives in New York and he resides in Indiana. It was the long distance that ultimately was the cause."
John told Rolling Stone in December 2013 that he's not a fan of New York. "I'm too sensitive to live there. I can't see poor people. I can't see the suffering. I can't see the trash on the streets...I'm not leaving Indiana. I'm going to die here."
