Emma Watson has received support from other feminists after a 4chan user threatened to release her nude photos over her U.N. speech about gender inequality. Emma, who admitted she was a feminist, launched on Saturday, September 20 the HeForShe campaign to unite men and women for gender equality.
PolicyMic senior editor Elizabeth Plank said, "Emma Watson, like so many other women online, is being silenced and kept in her place with misogyny as a weapon." Maya Dusenbery, executive director of Feministing, wrote, "So go ahead and add this response to Watson's argument for why we need feminism. Misogynists do have a tendency of proving your point for you - they can be helpful like that."
Meanwhile, Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett posted on the online comment site New Statesman, "All I can say Emma, is: f**k them. It makes me furious that these men, these boys, are attempting to grind you down, in the same way that similar men have tirelessly attempted to grind down the emergence of our gender as a viable political threat for generations now."
Emma's plea for men to join the fight for gender equality has sparked a flood of pledges from all over the world, including male celebrities like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Douglas Booth, Simon Pegg, Chris Colfer and Logan Lerman. The "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" actress tweeted on September 23, "I hope we can all finally change laws and mentalities in order to establish what is nothing more than common sense."
