Madonna's concert in French has been canceled after one person is killed and six others are injured when the stage being built for the gig collapses on top of them.

AceShowbiz - At least one person identified as a 53-year-old French man was killed and six people, one of whom is an American, were injured when they were building a huge stage for Madonna's planned concert in France. The accident occurred at Marseille's Velodrome Stadium on July 16 at 5:15 P.M. local time (11:15 A.M. EST) when the roof of the stage fell on top of dozens of workers during the stage construction.

Those who were injured have been taken to local hospitals for medical treatment, and the stadium has been closed. Up to date, the cause of the accident was not clear. "At this point we don't know how it happened, but we are confident no one else is still under the rubble," a police officer told CNN. "Since it did not collapse right away, that allowed several people to get out, to avoid being hit," Marseille city councillor Maurice Di Nocera explained to BBC News.

In the wake of the accident, Madonna released a statement saying, "I am devastated to have just received this tragic news. My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news."

Following the accident, Madonna's gig which was supposed to be held on July 19 has been canceled. As for her next stop, the pop singer, who paid tribute to Michael Jackson at London's O2 Arena on July 4, will perform in Madrid, Hamberg, Oslo and Warsaw among other big European cities. Fans can visit her official website to learn more detailed info about her forthcoming shows.
