While her two other pals are busy with their solo singing career, Michelle Williams (II) makes her own, joining Jeannette Bayardelle and Felicia P. Fields to star in the Chicago production of "The Color Purple" musical.

The stage version of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, set to kick off at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre April 17-July 22, will see the former Destiny's Child member plays the role of Shug Avery, a sexy blues singer.

"This is just a dream come true. I could not pass up the opportunity to do The Color Purple. To have the privilege of even auditioning was an honor for me," Williams says. On her joining the cast of the musical, the production's producer Scott Sanders says Michelle was chosen to play Shug because she is the character in the musical who has "seen the world."

Williams previously performed the title role in ''Aida'' on Broadway. More on the musical, one of its producers is Oprah Winfrey, who received an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Sofia in the film version.
