Of Mice & Men
Formed in Costa Mesa, California in 2009, Of Mice & Men emerged as a potent force in the modern metalcore scene, known for their blend of crushing breakdowns, melodic choruses, and emotionally charged lyrics. The band was founded by vocalist Austin Carlile, formerly of Attack Attack!, and bassist Jaxin Hall, who quickly recruited guitarist Phil Manansala, drummer Valentino Arteaga, and rhythm guitarist Shayley Bourget. Their self-titled debut album in 2010 established their signature sound, but it was their sophomore effort, 2011's "The Flood," that became their commercial breakthrough and a defining record for the genre, cementing their claim to fame.
The band's early career was marked by both rapid ascent and significant lineup changes. Following "The Flood," vocalist and lyricist Shayley Bourget departed, leading Austin Carlile to assume full clean vocal duties in addition to his screaming. This period solidified the band's identity, and their third album, 2014's "Restoring Force," debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, showcasing a broader, more alternative metal-influenced direction. However, Austin Carlile's ongoing battle with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder, forced him to step away from the band multiple times, with bassist Aaron Pauley taking over harsh vocal duties during tours.
In 2016, after the release of "Cold World," Austin Carlile officially left Of Mice & Men to focus on his health. This pivotal moment led to Aaron Pauley becoming the band's permanent lead vocalist and frontman. The quartet, now consisting of Aaron Pauley, Phil Manansala, Valentino Arteaga, and guitarist Alan Ashby, reinvented themselves with a renewed creative drive. Their subsequent albums, including "Defy" (2018) and "Earthandsky" (2019), were praised for their resilience and heavier, more nuanced approach, earning respect from both fans and critics.
The band continues to evolve, navigating further lineup changes, including the departures of Alan Ashby and Valentino Arteaga. As a trio led by Aaron Pauley, alongside Phil Manansala and new drummer Tino Arteaga, Of Mice & Men released the two-part album "Echo" in 2021 and "Tether" in 2023. They maintain an active touring schedule and a dedicated global fanbase, their career standing as a testament to perseverance and adaptation within the ever-changing landscape of heavy music.
