Tom holds a baptism ceremony in the river for those who have returned. It's disrupted by the discovery of a skull in the water. Sleep-deprived Deputy Carl arrives on the scene to tell Fred that there may be at least a half dozen people down there. Maggie is called in to help. She realizes the bones that were found were recently dug up and dumped in the river. Maggie tells Marty that the six sets of bodies are actually from just two people. They died, then returned, and left a body behind each time.

Margaret asks Maggie to cut her father a break because he's the only one who has had the courage to say that those who have returned don't really deserve to be there. They aren't saints. None of them have done anything to warrant a second chance. Maggie relays her theory about the bones to her dad. She also lets him know that she realize that it must have been hard for him to be down at the river.

Marty is having dreams about getting shot. He admits to Tom that he died. He tells him about his dream. He saw a dead version of himself that came back to life. Marty believes that since he came back, he must have a body out there. He takes action to meet the elegant woman who has been giving him orders. He wants to see his body from when he died. He'll be able to access it as soon as he reports something solid. Marty calls the elegant woman after Maggie reveals that the river people were likely murdered.

Carl's verbally abusive brother, Mikey, takes great pleasure in making him his slave. He's holding something over him regarding his parents. Mikey drinks heavily. Carl is humiliated to the point where he just can't take it anymore. BANG! BANG! BANG! Carl shoots his brother dead. Then he calmly takes a seat in the kitchen. Later, he buries the body in the basement. As he's doing so, he hears Mikey bellowing from upstairs. Carl's living nightmare continues. His brother has returned.

Jacob insists that he's ready to go to school. His grandmother believes it's time, too. Lucille does not. Nevertheless, they bring him to the school where they meet Principal Hayes and his teacher, Miss Lynch, who mistakes them for Jacob's grandparents. At home that night, Henry recalls how he used to go to work after he dropped Jacob at the bus stop. He quit after he died. It was his way of punishing himself. Henry doesn't want to do that anymore.

Fred finds a piece of cloth that matches bags seen at the old factory. He gets a voicemail message from Maggie about her murder theory just as he finds a small bone in the hole that was dug in the factory floor. Fred visits his daughter. Noises are heard. People have come to take away the bones Maggie has been studying. Elsewhere, Marty is allowed to look at his deceased body. It's a jarring experience. Later, Tom helps him place an unmarked cross in the cemetery. They'll be the only ones who know it's for Marty.
