AceShowbiz - A new adaptation of "Poltergeist" is coming to the small screen. Amazon MGM Studios is currently developing a TV series based on the iconic 1982 horror movie, according to Variety.

Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce on behalf of Amblin Television, who was founded by Steven Spielberg. However, the project has yet to find a writer for the project as it's only in the midst of early development.

Steven Spielberg co-wrote and produced the original movie. However, it remains unknown if Steven will return for the planned project.

The original movie, starring JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and Beatrice Straight, centers on the Freeling family whose suburban home is full of malicious ghosts who abduct their 5-year-old daughter, Carol Anne. The parents consult a parapsychologist and a spiritual medium in an effort to rescue their daughter.

The flick later turned into a horror franchise with its sequel "Poltergeist II: The Other Side" released in 1986. "Poltergeist III" was released 2 years later. The sequels continued to follow the Freeling family, who battles more supernatural demons and ghosts. Later in 2015, "Poltergeist" was rebooted in a movie featuring Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt.

The upcoming TV series is not the first TV adaptation of the movie. "Poltergeist: The Legacy" debuted in 1996 and aired for three seasons on Showtime. The show moved to Sci-Fi Channel for its fourth and final season in 1999.

The planned "Poltergeist" TV series joins other Amazon MGM Studios projects. "True Crime, True Faith: The Serial Killer and the Texas Mom Who Stopped Him", which is a Vanity Fair story about a Texas serial killer, is in the works in the studio. It is also developing a series about Glossier founder Emily Weiss based on Marisa Meltzer's nonfiction book "Glossy".
