Why Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom's Split Is Not a Surprise: Neither Wanted to 'Settle Down'

Katy and Orlando's awkward moment at Vanity Fair's Oscars After-Party last Sunday was captured on camera, but the 'Rise' singer seems to be doing just fine a day after announcing their split.

AceShowbiz - A day before news of Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom's split broke, it was reported that they didn't spend much time together at Vanity Fair's Oscars After-Party. And now a picture of their awkward moment at the Sunday, February 26 bash surfaces online.

In the picture obtained by E! News, the exes stood with an uncomfortable amount of space between each other as Katy glared at the "Lord of the Rings" actor. Meanwhile, Orlando appeared to try to talk to the "Roar" hitmaker, who stood arm-in-arm with her bestie Allison Williams.

Standing between the former couple in the background were Jennifer Aniston and her hubby Justin Theroux, as well as Judd Apatow, Leslie Mann, Dakota Johnson and Jason Bateman who attempted to make an exit from the party.

A source tells the site what happened between the two. "Katy pulled the plug," the so-called insider reveals. "It was a few events that happened over the past few months. They both still love each other very much, though, and getting back together could happen once they have some space." Another source says the breakup was "mutual."

Meanwhile, a source tells PEOPLE that the breakup was not a surprise, since Katy and Orlando never had any intention of taking it to the next level. "It was never really supposed to be serious between them," the source says. "When it first started, she was basically like 'This will be fun for now.' "

A pal of Orlando echoes the source's statement, saying that the 40-year-old actor was "happy and content" spending time with the 32-year-old songstress, but "was not in the mindset to settle down." The friend adds, "It wasn't as serious as everyone was making it out to be."

Over the last few weeks, the relationship "just became more and more work to make it work," says the Katy source. "Because this wasn't something permanent, it just became time to take a break." Orlando's friend adds that "there was nothing dramatic or over the top" leading to their split.

Katy herself doesn't seem to be dwelling in her heartbreak. She recently posted on Instagram a video of her goofing around with her two girl pals. She looked happy in the clip. "Best thing about making this record is that everyone helping me make it is just as coo-coo as I am @sarahhudsonxx @laurenglucksman," she captioned it, crediting her friends who made her smile.
