Universal has reportedly been looking for a major star to lead the remake of the 1999 action-horror movie, and is hoping Tom would fill that role.

AceShowbiz - Tom Cruise is in talks to star in upcoming Universal's reboot of "The Mummy", Variety reports. According to the site, the "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" actor will help to launch the studio's new era of monster films.

Alex Kurtzman is helming the reboot which will be set on the modern day, unlike the previous "The Mummy" movies starring Brendan Fraser. Alex is also producing alongside Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel. Jon Spaihts is penning the script. Universal had no comment on the casting speculation.

Jon Mone and Jay Polidoro of Universal will oversee the project for the studio. The site adds that Tom isn't expected to produce, but he will have a major part in development.

Other potential films revolve around the characters of Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Bride of Frankenstein, and vampire hunter Van Helsing. Characters from the monster universe films are expected to crop up in each other's installments before culminating in an "Avengers"-style tie-in flick.

Tom is currently filming "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back". He was planning on reuniting with Doug Liman in "Luna Park" but when Liman took on Fox's "Gambit", it left a space in Tom's schedule for "The Mummy". He will then jump into prep for "Mission: Impossible 6" which shoots in August 2016.
