The ABC Family adaptation of 'The Mortal Instruments' book series will premiere early 2016 and get a behind-the-scene special in December 2015.

AceShowbiz - ABC Family announced on Saturday, October 10 that its new saga series "Shadowhunters" would premiere on January 12, 2016 at 9 P.M. ET. But before that, the network will preview a special titled "Beyond the Shadows: The Making of Shadowhunters" on December 6 at 9.30 P.M. ET.

"Shadowhunters" is based on Cassandra Clare's best-selling Young Adult fantasy book series "The Mortal Instruments". The series centers on 18-year-old Clary Fray who finds out on her birthday she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters; human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting.

Katherine McNamara stars as Fray, supported by Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Emeraude Toubia, Matthew Daddario, Isaiah Mustafa and Harry Shum, Jr. . "I love Clary because she has this blend of strength and vulnerability," McNamara described her character during NYC Comic Con. "And she has a huge journey that only barely begins in the first season and I'm really excited to share it with you."

"Terminator Salvation" helmer McG will direct the first episode and he said during the Comic Con panel that it was important to "get it right" especially in the casting. McG also serves as executive producer along with Ed Decter.

On how much was borrowed from the books, Decter said, "We are not following the books one to one with the seasons. However, what we're doing is we're borrowing. We may set something up that we know happens in season 6, but start setting it up now."

The NY Comic Con panel also debuted a 6-minute clip from the pilot. A man walks down the street, being followed by Alec who quickly disappears when the man looks back. The man reveals himself as a demon and Alec, joined by Isabelle and Jace, follow him to Pandemonium. Jace runs into Fray for the first time and her friends say she is the only one who can see the boy. She goes in for some answers.
