Production company Constantin Film has hired Ed Decter as the showrunner for the series that's expected to begin production next year.

AceShowbiz - "The Mortal Instruments" will hit the small screen after its first movie "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" tanked at the Box Office. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that production company Constantin Film is planning to relaunch the YA adaptation as a TV series.

The company has enlisted Ed Decter, whose credits include "Helix", "Unforgettable", "In Plain Sight" and "The Client List", as the showrunner for the series which is expected to start production next year. No broadcast partners have been announced.

"It actually makes sense to do [the novels] as a TV series," Constantin film and TV head Martin Moszkowicz told THR. "There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we'll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth."

Directed by Harald Zwart, the big screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare's novel stars Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Zegers and Lena Headey among others. The film earned only $31 million in the domestic box-office, causing Constantin Film to shelve other "Mortal Instruments" films.
