The newest version of Shakespeare's famous love tragedy is previewed in the first trailer of "Romeo and Juliet". Directed by Carlo Carlei, the film introduces Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfeld and rising star Douglas Booth as the two star-crossed lovers as shown in the video.
Unlike the 1996 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio which took the timeless tale to modern setting, this latest version opts for traditional interpretation as seen in the costumes and settings. The film still retells struggles faced by the couple as Romeo is seen engaging in a battle with Lord Capulet while Juliet falls to her knees and is in tears.
Penned by "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes, the film features A-list cast members, including Paul Giamatti as Friar Laurence and Damian Lewis as Lord Capulet. Additionally, Natasha McElhone, Ed Westwick, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Stellan Skarsgard, and Lesley Manville join the cast ensemble.
Produced by Swarovski Entertainment, the drama is set to be released in U.K. on October 25, while the U.S. release date has not been announced yet.
"Romeo and Juliet" marks the return of Hailee who has taken a long hiatus since her last film "True Grit". Because of her impressive acting as Mattie Ross in the 2010 film, the 16-year-old actress immediately rose to fame and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She will next be seen in "Ender's Game", which will hit U.S. theaters on November 1.
