Five Dead in Sugarland Concert After Stage Collapse

Sugarland

People were trapped beneath the collapsed rigging, taken to hospitals, and several of them died overnight.

Tragedy struck just before Sugarland hit the stage. A massive gust of wind between 60 and 70 mph struck a festive concert at the Indiana State Fair, knocking off the stage and killing at least five people and injuring dozens.

Victims as identified by the Marion County coroner's office are Tammy Vandam, 42, of Wanatah; Glenn Goodrich, 49, of Indianapolis; Alina Bigjohny, 23, of Fort Wayne; Christina Santiago, 29, of Chicago; and Nathan Byrd, 51, of Indianapolis. Around 40 people received treatment in hospitals in the area and many of them are in critical condition.

The country band have released a statement, saying "We are all right after our stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair tonight. Many of our fans and friends in Indianapolis may not be. Please keep them in your thoughts, prayers, or whatever form of strength you are able to send. They need you. Thank you."

Sara Bareilles who just took the stage earlier wrote on her Twitter, "I'm speechless and feel so helpless. Please send love and prayers to Indianapolis tonight. My heart aches for the lives lost."

No one was performing on stage while the accident happened. There actually had been storm warnings and evacuation was on the way but they were too late. Wind and rain grew stronger as the opening act descended the stage.
