'Star Trek' Sequel Won't Be Called 'Star Trek 2'

Rejecting the idea of 'Star Trek 2' title, director J.J. Abrams says that the follow-up movie to the 2009's 'Star Trek' needs to be the most meaningful adventure for the U.S.S. Enterprise crew.

AceShowbiz - While many are referring the sequel of 2009's "Star Trek" with the name of "Star Trek 2", director J.J. Abrams ruled out the possibility of it being used as the title. On a phone interview with MTV, the 43-year-old expressed his thought on the matter, "I think we can't really do that, right? I don't know what you'd call it. It's a good question. I'm not sure."

Title is not the only thing the co-creator of "Lost" discussed with the network though. He also opened up on what he has in mind of the sequel, saying "The second one has an obligation to go deeper and maintain the fun and adventure in the sense of optimism and scale that ['Trek' originator Gene] Roddenberry created."

"But I do think it has to evolve and not become some polemic over-the-top, on-the-nose allegory," he continued on explaining his grounds. "It needs to be something that is not just about the characters meeting each other and having their first adventure; it needs to be about having their most meaningful one."

As for how far the movie is in its development, the producer of "Cloverfield" stated that they are still in early stages. "We're literally just beginning discussions about the story and where we want to go," he said. "We have some very broad stroke ideas that are very exciting. We're obviously going to do the best we can in terms of rewarding an audience."

The next "Star Trek" movie, untitled Star Trek sequel, has been planned by Paramount Pictures. The studio has secured screenwriter duo Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman as well as scribe Damon Lindelof to pen the sequel's script. In early October, Abrams sparked rumor that this new movie could be made in 3-D. Still, no official word is shared just yet by the studio regarding this issue.
