Re: the post below. I don't think the depiction of the male characters was supposed to be entirely typical of and limited to German males. One cannot deny that women the world over were very much oppressed during this time (and still are for that matter), and the behavior of men in this movie was atypical of many males during this period.
Autocratic, cruel and macho behavior of German males is accurately projected in this troubling film. Although not every aspect of Nazim's growth can be attributed to this characteristic, it is certainly one of the factors leading to the horrors of the 20th century.
