Movie Story
"The Secret Life of Bees," based on the New York Times best selling novel and set in South Carolina in 1964, is the moving tale of Lily Owens (Fanning) a 14 year-old girl who is haunted by the memory of her late mother (Burton). To escape her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father (Bettany), Lily flees with Rosaleen (Hudson), her caregiver and only friend, to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by the intelligent and independent Boatwright sisters (Latifah, Okonedo and Keys), Lily finds solace in their mesmerizing world of beekeeping.
Reader's Reviews

Beautfiful cinematography. Ummm...interesting clip. But I had trouble understanding one of Dakota Fanning's lines. I had to turn up the volume & rewind a portion of it several times to get what she was saying! I had to do that with her parts in some of "Dreamer" as well! Dakota, you're a nice kid & all, but as an actress, you've got to learn to speak your dialogue a LITTLE CLEARER!

i loved the book.. it is one of my favorites! Dakota I think you will do amazing playing the part of Lily.. i cant wait

I am very excited about this movie and I can't wait to see Jennifer Hudson in action again. And to pbNik: there is nothing wrong with Dakota's dialogue. If you ever see her in interviews she speaks very well and clearly. Its called "acting" for a reason and she played her part very well. If you would have paid attention to the synopsis you would have seen that the movie is set in South Carolina in the 1960s and Dakota's character has a Southern dialect. If you knew anything you would know that Southerners are known to be fast and slurred speakers, and Dakota portrayed that very well being that she is from the South (Georgia to be exact). So pbNik stick to your day job and leave movie critiquing and coaching to the professionals.

What the he double l were u people looking at? Keys looked and talked kie someone was whispering her lines to her, poor acting skills. Queen tired to talk and act like she was sharing wisdom,b ut talked so slow you could figue out were she was going in her lines. Hudson just looked busted. She dont have to worry about winning any awards here. Her wise cracks were to eddie haskel to me. borning movie nothing to rush out to see.It should have stayed a book the movie was not worth the money.

Cowboys, you make no sense. Please check your spelling and grammar before posting anything; it makes you a less credible critic. I cried, laughed, and was emotionally moved. Hats off to the ladies!

Too bad those few felt they had to post bad reviews - this was an excellent production. Great cast, all believable. I wasn't prepared to like it because the book was so good, but was pleasantly surprised. Anyone know where it was filmed?

This book is my favourite book, so when I heard a movie was coming out I got really excited. When I saw the movie I felt really bummed because it went by so fast, I mean April is barely mentioned, I think it's crucial to know that May's twin sister killed herself, as for May. I love who plays May, but breaking into tears wasn't how it happened, she started to hum a song first, and then..cry, May's whole break down and then sudden suicide didn't happen in a matter of 30 minutes. I think it should have been longer and more things elaborated, so that this movie didn't seem like it was rushed through. Great scenes, but they were like vignettes. I advise all those who watch the movie or are planning to, to read the book first, because had I not read the book first I would have been bored and wouldn't have cared so much, and would have been blown away by the sudden death of May before I had even gotten a chance to connect with her in the movie like I had in the book.
