Story

Based on a true story, "John Rabe" tells the story of a German businessman who rescued more than 200,000 civilians during the so-called "Nanking Massacre" in China. “..Cello-scored pantomimes of resilience and grief can make us feel, but it's not always evident who or what that serves..”
by Eric Hynes [Village Voice]
“..A fine performance by Ulrich Tukur, as the eponymous German who managed to save over 200,000 Chinese during the 1937 Nanjing massacre by the Japanese army, is the main reason to see "John Rabe"..”
by Derek Elley [Variety]
“..From the outset of "John Rabe" you are uncomfortably aware of watching a wartime melodrama that, despite its honorable intentions, will throw in any emotional ploy to keep you engaged..”
by Stephen Holden [NY Times]
