Nov 15, 2010This book is not a fable. A fable has certain elements that have to be included (like an animal). That being said, this is a good book for tweens/teens to read to get *some* idea about the Holocaust, but shouldn't be relied on for accurate historical points. I wish Boyne was compelled to not dumb down things. How hard would it have been for him to use the proper term Oma instead of "grandmother". Small things that like would have given more credibility to this film/book and would have taught young readers to think outside the box.

Jun 27, 2009The casting was perfect, and I know it isn't entirely accurate in its portrayal of the Holocaust, but it was still a great story. I loved that Bruno's mother is afraid of her children learning to much about Hitler because it is much more humane than the adults seem to be portrayed in most Holocaust novels and films. I love sad movies (right before I watched this movie I watched Seven Pounds and cried so hard but loved it) and this movie is just wonderful in my opinion.

Jan 27, 2009A mother coming across the clothes of her child would not have automatically assumed what had happened. At the sight of her childs clothes laying on the ground would have triggered her motherly instinct and would have sent her into a frenzy in an attempt to try to locate her missing child and the father, being the one who gave the order to terminate the lives of the prisoners, would not have just accepted what had happened when he saw that the order to terminate the lives of the Jewish prisioners had just recently been carried out. He would have at least attempted to stop the process. In my humble opinion the ending would have been much more powerful if the father had screamed orders to open the chamber doors in an attempt to save his son. At which point the mother would have come onto the scene as the the doors where opened and both mother and father discovered the bodies of the two boys and realized it was not too late. The Nazi father could have just looked down with non emotional detachment realizing that his actions as a Nazi officer had just caused the death of his son while the mother screamed and or moaned with the agony only a mother could feel at the sight of her beloved little boy laying lifeless.
