It's Official: Bryan Singer to Direct and Produce 'Battlestar Galactica'

"" helmer Bryan Singer has come on board the "" movie, according to Variety. A day after Hitfix reported that the filmmaker was close to sign a deal with Universal Pictures, the studio confirmed that he will take on directing as well as producing duties for the sci-fi film based on 1978 TV series of the same title.

Singer, who was said to be looking for $10 million paycheck for the film, has long eyed "Battlestar Galactica" project. In 2001, he planned to relaunch the sequel of the series, teaming up with executive producer Tom De Santo. However, the project was never released due to some similarities between the planned plot and 9/11 tragedy, which took place three months before shooting took place and delayed the production.

Should a new "" movie is made, film director Bryan Singer could be involved in the project. HitFix broke the news that Universal Pictures is nearing a deal with the helmer of "" to produce and possibly direct a brand new feature film that is based on the 1970s sci-fi series.

If Singer were indeed involved in the project, it won't be his first work for the feature version. Back in 2001, the 43-year-old filmmaker teamed up with producer Tom De Santo in developing a Battlestar Galactica sequel to the original series. Three months before shooting took place, 9/11 struck and since there are similarities between the planned plot and real-life tragedy, the project was shelved.

A big screen treatment for TV series "Battlestar Galactica" has been thought of. Recently, IGN have come up with a story that Universal Pictures are planning to develop a feature film based on the 1970s sci-fi series and have lined up series creator Glen A. Larson to be the project's screenwriter and producer.

While the "" remake aired on Sci Fi Channel has claimed an Emmy and Peabody Award, the trade reported that the movie version won't be based on this Ronald D. Moore-created series. IGN further insisted that though Universal Studios have denied the report, they were able to confirm the news from independent sources and expect the studio to make official announcement in the coming weeks.
