AceShowbiz - Universal Pictures took a major step forward in the development of "Battlestar Galactica" movie. The studio reportedly has nabbed a writer and is close to hiring a director for the big-screen adaptation of Glen Larson's 1978 TV series of the same title.

According to Deadline, Lisa Joy, who scripted and executive produces HBO's "Westworld", is on board to write the script. Meanwhile, Francis Lawrence who directed the three "The Hunger Games" sequels is in early talks to direct the sci-fi movie.

The movie will be produced by Michael De Luca Productions and Bluegrass Films partners Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark. Bluegrass is now gearing up for the release of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Kevin Hart's "Central Intelligence" and Matthew McConaughey's "Free State of Jones". De Luca is also producing "Fifty Shades Darker" and "Fifty Shades Freed" which have been filmed back-to-back.

The favorite 1978 TV series led to the creation of the 2004 TV series "Battlestar Galactica" airing on Syfy. Time magazine called the latter one of the "100 best TV shows of all-time." However, it was canceled after four seasons.

The story takes place in a distant corner of the fictional Twelve Colonies. The human civilization inhabiting the colonies has been in a war with the Cylons. After being virtually wiped out by the cybernetic race, the surviving humans attempt to find the mythical planet Earth to make their new home.
