Leslie startles Ben with an explosive surprise: she's asking Ben to prom! She explains that the Pawnee school district has cut the budget for school dances, so the Parks Department is throwing the best high school prom ever.

Leslie heads the prom committee meeting, where an eager up-and-coming future Leslie Knope named Allison with an elaborate binder of prom theme ideas catches her eye. Ben and Tom will split the DJ duties, but their music tastes don't exactly sync up. April is not excited about prom, but Andy convinces her to be his date, assuring her that she'll have a great time. She reluctantly accepts the invitation.

After the meeting, Leslie offers Allison an internship with the Parks Department, but Ron interrupts to stop the transaction. Ron wants Allison to get a paying job rather than a government job that doesn't pay. He offers to set Allison up with a paying summer job at the local sawmill. Allison isn't sure which offer to accept, which means that Leslie and Ron will have to battle for Allison's favor.

The prom preparations are in full swing at the high school gym, and Tom and Ben are still arguing over music selections for the festivities. Leslie is doing some serious bonding with Allison, and the two of them are like peas in a pod. Ron attempts to interrupt the bonding session by paying Allison to help with construction duties.

Later at the prom, Andy tries to encourage April to have a good time at the prom. She's reluctant, but she gives Andy permission to have fun. Meanwhile, the high school students aren't digging Tom's music style. Ben, on the other hand, proves to be a smashing success with his retro hits. Ron and Leslie continue to battle for Allison's favor until the school principal pulls them into his office for a good talking to about their behavior with Allison. Ron and Leslie agree to let Allison make her own decision.

Meanwhile, April rigs the prom elections to ensure that Andy wins the title of Prom King. During his acceptance speech, Andy declares April the rightful prom queen, causing them to be kicked out of the prom. April is finally having fun!

Tom feels dejected because the high school audience didn't appreciate his musical inclinations, but Ben convinces him that he's accomplished a lot in the past year. Ron and Leslie apologize to Allison for coming on too strong, and Allison introduces them to her boyfriend, Greg Pukaitis, who used to prank the Parks department all the time. He manages to staple Leslie's dress to the tablecloth before he and Allison depart.
