AceShowbiz - Alice Cooper is set to release a new memoir titled Devil on My Shoulder: A Memoir on October 6, offering an intimate look at his life beyond the stage. At 78 years old, the rock icon promises this will be his most definitive autobiography yet, despite having published two previous memoirs, Me, Alice in 1976 and Golf Monster in 2007.
The book will delve into the creation of the Alice Cooper character, which the singer, born Vincent Furnier, developed in the late 1960s with his bandmates. It will explore the contrast between his notorious onstage persona, dubbed the "Godfather of Shock Rock," and the deeply religious, sober man he is in private. According to the publisher, the memoir aims to untangle the myths and fabrications that have grown around the artist’s life after more than 30 records and over 60 years in the business.
Alice Cooper shared in a statement that the memoir tracks the “evilution” of his alter ego and how he has finally managed to control it. He describes the relationship between himself and the character as once nearly fatal and promises to clarify what is real and what has been exaggerated over decades of storytelling.
In addition to personal reflections, the memoir will feature revealing anecdotes about many famous figures Cooper has met throughout his career. These include iconic names such as Salvador Dalí, Bob Hope, John Lennon, Groucho Marx, Vincent Price, Frank Sinatra, Errol Flynn, Bette Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Gerald Ford, Andy Warhol, and Tiger Woods.
The book will also provide insights into some of the shock-rock artist’s most infamous stage props, including the guillotine, the character “Cold Ethyl,” fake dead babies, and his trademark snake. Fans of Alice Cooper can expect a candid and comprehensive look at the man behind the theatrical horror show.
