Jimmy Kimmel briefly considered toning down Trump jokes, but quickly returned to form, roasting the state dinner and U.S. relations.

AceShowbiz - Jimmy Kimmel recently considered easing up on his jokes about Donald Trump and Melania Trump after a week filled with tension between the late-night host and the first couple. However, during his latest monologue on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" he quickly reverted to his usual comedic style.
In his opening remarks, Kimmel referenced the recent state dinner in Washington, D.C., which honored King Charles III and Queen Camilla. He joked about the purpose of King Charles's visit, saying, "So, King Charles is here to try to mend the fractured relationship between the United States and everyone really. Everyone in the world." He added humorously, "We are about as popular as scabies right now. Our special relationship with England is on the rocks."
Continuing his routine, Kimmel noted that the evening’s event highlighted more than just international relations. He quipped about the dynamic between Donald and Melania Trump, remarking, "Our first couple, Donald and Melania, who lately have seemed closer than ever - and I like to think I played a part in that."
He then invited the studio audience to focus on the Trumps' hand gestures upon entering the event, emphasizing that "because the hands say so much." A clip showed Melania Trump briefly holding her husband's hand while wearing gloves, then pulling it away. The president tapped her hand, but she did not reciprocate. This subtle interaction drew laughter from the audience.
Kimmel commented, "You know what? Considering the week I've had with the first couple, I'm just going to say that is a completely normal way to interact for two people who are very much in love." Yet he quickly followed up with a sharper observation: "Maybe that's why his hands are all bruised, from Melania swatting them away."
The tension between Kimmel and the Trumps has been well-publicized. Earlier in the week, the first lady took to X (formerly Twitter) demanding ABC fire the comedian after he made a controversial joke during his monologue spoofing the White House Correspondents' Dinner. The joke compared Melania Trump to an "expectant widow" just days before the dinner was canceled following a shooting incident.
Melania Trump wrote on social media, "Kimmel's hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn't comedy - his words are corrosive and deepen the political sickness within America. People like Kimmel shouldn't have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate. A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him. Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC's leadership enable Kimmel's atrocious behavior at the expense of our community."
Following her statement, Donald Trump echoed the call on his platform Truth Social, demanding the host be "immediately fired" by ABC. He described Kimmel's behavior as "something far beyond the pale."
In response, Kimmel defended his joke as a "light roast," specifically addressing the age difference between the president and first lady. "It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he's almost 80 and she's younger than I am," he explained on Monday. "It was not, by any stretch of the definition, a call to assassination. And they know that. I've been very vocal for many years, speaking out against gun violence, in particular."
The full monologue is available for viewing, where Kimmel balances his sharp political humor with commentary on current events. "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on ABC.
The ongoing public exchanges between Kimmel and the Trumps have kept the spotlight on the host’s political satire and the first couple’s reaction to media criticism. Despite recent calls for his dismissal, Kimmel continues to use his platform to provide comedic commentary on the administration and related political happenings.
