The project will chronicle the early years of the band, capturing their journey from humble origins in Sayreville, New Jersey, to worldwide stardom. With lead singer Jon Bon Jovi at the helm, the band achieved monumental success, selling over 130 million albums and earning prestigious honors such as inductions into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

According to Deadline, Universal Pictures secured the rights to this definitive biopic after a competitive bidding process involving several studios. Known for backing acclaimed music biopics like Straight Outta Compton (2015) and 8 Mile (2002), Universal’s involvement ensures access to the band’s extensive music catalog and the active participation of Jon Bon Jovi himself, promising an authentic portrayal of the band’s formative era.

The film will focus on the critical milestones that propelled Bon Jovi to international fame, highlighting the rise of their signature anthems such as “Livin’ On A Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name.” Screenwriter Cody Brotter, who recently contributed to another music biopic directed by Mike Judge, has been enlisted to pen the screenplay. Production will be overseen by Kevin J. Walsh alongside Gotham Chopra, whose company Religion of Sports previously produced the 2024 Hulu documentary series Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. Chopra directed all four episodes of the series in close collaboration with the band members, marking a comprehensive look at their career in honor of the band’s 40th anniversary.

Jon Bon Jovi has expressed interest in seeing a biopic about his own life in the future. In an interview with The Sun, he mentioned that his son, Jake Bongiovi—an actor known for films like Rockbottom and Sweethearts—would be a natural choice to portray him on screen.

Born Jon Bongiovi in 1962, his musical path was inspired by his Beatles-loving mother and further fueled by witnessing Bruce Springsteen perform in his early teens. Before his breakthrough, Jon Bon Jovi took a job at the Power Station recording studio, where he gained firsthand experience by observing legendary bands such as Aerosmith. Despite initial rejections from record labels, his song “Runaway” gained traction on local radio, paving the way for him to adopt the stage name Jon Bon Jovi and assemble a band featuring some of New Jersey’s finest musicians, including keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, bassist Alec John Such, and guitarist Richie Sambora.

The biopic will track the band's ascent through the release of their third album, Slippery When Wet, which spawned massive hits and sold approximately 30 million copies worldwide. This breakthrough album solidified Bon Jovi as a dominant force in rock music, enabling them to fill stadiums globally. However, the grueling performances and Jon Bon Jovi’s famously demanding high vocals eventually took a physical toll on the singer.

While Chopra’s documentary delved into the band’s struggles with issues like substance abuse, its core narrative centered on Jon Bon Jovi facing a critical moment when he required vocal cord surgery. After a challenging recovery period, he successfully retrained his voice, regaining the high notes that became a hallmark of his sound and ensuring the band’s continued success.
