AceShowbiz - The iconic rock group Bon Jovi is set to be the focus of a new biographical film, with Universal Studios securing the rights after a competitive bidding process. The project promises an authentic portrayal of the band’s journey, highlighting their rise from humble beginnings to global stardom.
The studio behind acclaimed music biopics Straight Outta Compton and 8 Mile will produce this film, ensuring a creative team experienced in capturing the essence of legendary musical acts. This biopic will have the full involvement of Jon Bon Jovi, the band's co-founder and frontman, along with access to their extensive catalog of hits. The band’s impressive repertoire includes over 130 million records sold worldwide, featuring classics like “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “It’s My Life,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” and “Bad Medicine.”
While the director and cast have not yet been announced, the screenplay will be penned by Cody Brotter, known for his work on Killing Satoshi and The Dukes of Oxy. Producing the film will be Kevin J. Walsh, recognized for Manchester By the Sea, and Gotham Chopra, whose production company recently released the 2024 Hulu docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. That series featured all band members and provided an intimate look at Jon Bon Jovi’s near career-ending vocal challenges and surgery, coinciding with the band’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
According to reports from Variety, the film will concentrate on the group’s early years. It will depict how Jon Bon Jovi, originally named Jon Bongiovi, recorded the band’s debut single “Runaway” with session musicians after being turned down by all record labels. Undeterred, he personally promoted the track to New York metro rock DJs, some of whom embraced its raw rock appeal.
The story will also explore the formation of the band, featuring fellow New Jersey natives who became key members: keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, the late bassist Alec John Such, and original guitarist Richie Sambora, who played with the band from 1983 until 2013. The narrative will build up to the release of their breakthrough 1986 album Slippery When Wet, which dominated the Billboard 200 chart at No. 1 for eight weeks and produced chart-topping singles such as “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer.”
Though the film’s production timeline and release date have yet to be revealed, it will follow closely after the 2023 biopic about Jon Bon Jovi’s musical influence, fellow New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen. That film, titled Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, explored Springsteen’s storied career and legacy.
In other news related to the band, Bon Jovi released their sixteenth studio album, Forever, in 2024. They are also preparing for their first live shows in four years, kicking off with a series of nine concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City, beginning July 7.
This upcoming biopic aims to offer fans a deep dive into the band’s origins, challenges, and ultimate triumphs, celebrating the enduring impact of Bon Jovi on rock music history.
