AceShowbiz - The California Supreme Court has declined to review the appeal of Tory Lanez regarding his conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot, upholding his 10-year prison sentence.
In a ruling issued last week, the state’s highest court rejected the petition for review submitted by the singer, whose real name is Daystar Peterson. He was convicted in 2022 of shooting Megan Thee Stallion (Megan Pete) during a late-night dispute in Hollywood Hills. The incident took place more than five years ago and has remained a major legal battle since.
Tory Lanez and his legal team have persistently claimed his innocence, arguing that the evidence was insufficient and that he did not receive a fair trial. However, a lower appeals court dismissed these arguments in November, affirming both the conviction and the lengthy sentence imposed on Lanez.
The Supreme Court’s denial, released on Wednesday, February 25, means the ruling from the intermediate appeals court stands, and the conviction will not be overturned. Like the U.S. Supreme Court, California’s top court accepts only a small fraction of appeals for review, making this a significant setback for Lanez’s legal efforts.
The shooting occurred on July 12, 2020, after a party at Kylie Jenner’s residence. According to prosecutors, the shooting happened as a driver transported Lanez, Megan Thee Stallion, and her assistant Kelsey Harris away from the party. When Megan Thee Stallion exited the vehicle and walked away, Lanez allegedly shouted, “Dance, b-h!” and fired a gun, hitting her foot.
Initially, Megan Thee Stallion told police she had injured her foot by stepping on broken glass. However, days later, she revealed she had been shot. Charges against Tory Lanez were filed in October 2022.
During the high-profile trial in Los Angeles, Lanez’s defense team attempted to cast doubt on who fired the gun, suggesting that Harris might have been responsible. Nonetheless, a critical defense witness gave contradictory testimony, while prosecutors presented evidence including a prior statement from Harris that implicated Lanez. Megan Thee Stallion testified powerfully that Lanez was the shooter. Neither Lanez nor the driver testified in court.
Despite the conviction, Tory Lanez and his supporters describe the outcome as a “miscarriage of justice.” His lawyers have submitted multiple appeals challenging the verdict, all of which have been rejected so far. The defense has also publicly claimed to possess new evidence that could exonerate Lanez, although representatives for Megan Thee Stallion and prosecutors strongly dispute these assertions.
This latest decision from the California Supreme Court solidifies the legal outcome in one of the most widely publicized celebrity criminal cases of recent years, leaving Tory Lanez to serve his sentence as ruled by the courts.
