AceShowbiz - The highly anticipated Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook, Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, is slated for its official general release in December. While many eagerly await its arrival, D&D Beyond Master Tier members have already gained early access to its contents. As its title suggests, this new publication primarily focuses on the Artificer class, introducing significant adjustments and novel characteristics that align with the updated 2024 ruleset.
Beyond its core focus, Eberron: Forge of the Artificer enriches the game with several new Artificer subclasses, including an entirely fresh option known as the Cartographer. The book also provides updated mechanics for various species, such as the enigmatic Kalashtar, the adaptable Shifter, and the ever-versatile Changeling. Dungeon Masters and players will find new campaign setup options designed to immerse their parties in the unique world of Eberron, blending classic fantasy elements with a distinctive partially steampunk aesthetic. Additionally, the sourcebook introduces new D&D feats, many of which are intricately woven into the setting’s thematic fabric.
However, one of the most profound alterations within the new ruleset directly impacts the very foundation of the Artificer as a class. Under the 2014 rules, a cornerstone ability for the Artificer was their unique skill known as Infusion. With the advent of the 2024 rules and the release of Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, Infusions, as a standalone moniker, cease to exist. Instead, this iconic feature has been rebranded and integrated as a core component of the Replicate Magic Item class feature.
Much like the previous Infusions, the updated Replicate Magic Item ability allows the Artificer to learn various plans from a curated table of magical items, with their repertoire expanding at specific level thresholds. The fundamental essence of crafting new magic items remains largely intact; however, a monumental change has been introduced that constitutes a massive buff to what many consider the Artificer's best class feat. Crucially, with the new Eberron book, Artificers no longer require a pre-existing base item to transform it into a magical one.
Under the 2014 rules, for instance, an Artificer needed a mundane Shield to apply their Infusion feat and craft it into a Shield +1. Now, with this significant update, Artificers possess the remarkable capability to essentially conjure a magic item from thin air. They simply utilize their Tinker's Tools, which are readily available as part of their starting equipment. This means that as early as level 2, Artificers in the D&D 2024 rules can create powerful items such as a Shield +1, a Weapon +1, or even a coveted Bag of Holding, all without the need for any additional components beyond their tools and ingenuity.
This fundamental change in how Artificers create magic items is truly transformative, forever altering how an entire adventuring party can equip themselves and prepare for challenges. While this update significantly empowers the Artificer class, Dungeon Masters retain the discretion to still require specific components should they feel these updated mechanics might disrupt their campaign balance or overall game experience.
