AceShowbiz - Longtime Survivor host Jeff Probst recently shed light on a challenging moment from the show’s October 29 episode, where he was visibly struggling with the intense Fijian heat. Jeff Probst, known for his stoic presence, was seen doubling over during a Season 49 challenge, a rare glimpse into the physical demands faced by both cast and crew in the tropical environment.
Speaking on the October 30 episode of his On Fire podcast, the 63-year-old explained the severity of the conditions. “The island where that challenge took place is the single hottest spot we ever shoot in Fiji,†Jeff Probst revealed to cohosts Jay Wolff and Jeremy Collins. He described the location as uniquely oppressive, admitting, “It might be the hottest spot in all of Fiji and I don’t know why. I’ve asked people on our team and I never get a good answer.â€
His description painted a vivid picture of the heat’s intensity. “It’s like you’re in a sauna and someone is pouring more water on the coals,†Jeff Probst stated, emphasizing, “I’m not exaggerating.†This oppressive atmosphere led to him gasping for air and hunching over. The moment was so striking that contestant Rizo Velovic playfully inquired, “Jeff, you out of breath, too?†to which Jeff Probst candidly replied, “It’s no joke, man!â€
Despite filming in Fiji since 2016, Jeff Probst admitted the crew never truly acclimates to the scorching weather, particularly in certain areas. He recounted the common experience: “It’s beautiful skies, the wind is blowing your hair back, you feel amazing. And then you step off the boat and walk into this dense forest... And then you walk in and go, ‘But my God, it’s hot! It’s so hot again today!’†He noted that everyone tries not to say it, but the heat is undeniable.
Jeff Probst was not alone in his struggle. Castaway Kristina Mills, 36, also faced significant difficulty breathing due to the extreme temperatures. She required examination by the medical team, though thankfully, she was later cleared to continue in the competition. This incident underscored the constant vigilance required from the production team.
The host took the opportunity to commend the show’s dedicated medical department. He assured listeners that player health and safety are paramount, always taking precedence over challenges. “Our medical department has all of their emergency bags right there literally [filled] with band aids to a defibrillator,†Jeff Probst explained. He highlighted their unique role: “They’re not just watching the drama for the challenge, they’re watching the players’ actions. They’re making sure that everyone is OK.â€
This candid discussion offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the extreme conditions inherent to Survivor. While the show thrives on pushing contestants to their limits, Jeff Probst’s experience and the medical team’s protocols reinforce the critical balance between intense gameplay and ensuring the well-being of everyone involved.
