AceShowbiz - Comedian Amber Ruffin was happy she did not have to take the stage at this year's White House Correspondents' Dinner. Following the muted event over the weekend, the female comedian weighed in on the matter with Stephen Colbert.
In her interview, Ruffin recalled her thoughts on the possibility of balancing humor about both political sides at such a divisive time. "I had said that it would be impossible to make jokes about both sides," she noted.
"We are at a point now where one side is snatching people up off the street and putting them on a plane, and the other side is, you know, not doing that. So I just thought it would be impossible to make jokes about both sides.”
Ruffin admitted she felt disappointed for a brief period after being disinvited. "I was really, really sad for like two hours, but then I had a brunch and then I felt great," she said with a laugh.
Reflecting on her material prepared for the event, Ruffin admitted her jokes might have indeed caused discomfort. "I thought if they didn't want me doing that show before I had even opened my mouth, then they would have been really, really sad with what they got," she said.
"Also, after they fired me, I looked back at my Google Doc and was like, This would have been bad. They would not have liked it.' "
Nonetheless, Ruffin shared that she planned to end her performance on a positive note. "I was going to end it with, 'This administration is trying to get you to hate other people and that's not your natural state,' " she recounted.
"Human beings are made to love one another... And they got you by convincing you that you are filled with hate and you absolutely aren't. It's the opposite of what you're made for and saying that out loud now makes me glad that I got canceled."
A White House deputy chief of staff had raised concerns about Ruffin's critical remarks regarding former President Donald Trump. This led the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) to withdraw her from the event in an effort to "ensure the focus is not on the politics of division."
Despite Amber Ruffin's removal and the absence of comedic roast from the dinner, Donald Trump ultimately still refused to attend the event.
