AceShowbiz - Karen Huger, known for her role in "The Real Housewives of Potomac," will have serve time in jail. She has been sentenced to two years in prison with one year suspended, totaling a one-year term behind bars.
The sentencing, handed down by Judge Terrence McGann of the Montgomery County Circuit Court, comes after Huger was found guilty on multiple charges stemming from a DUI incident in March 2024.
Huger, 61, was visibly intoxicated when she crashed her Maserati into a pole during the late-night incident. Police body cam footage released from the scene showed Huger slurring her words and name-dropping Bravo producer Andy Cohen, even describing herself as "Thomas Jefferson's concubine."
Her subsequent arrest was met with public and legal scrutiny, leading to charges including DUI, negligent driving, failure to control speed, and failure to notify authorities of an address change. She was acquitted of reckless driving.
The judge's decision to hand Huger a prison sentence was influenced not only by the recent incident but also by her history of driving violations, which includes three other documented cases of driving while impaired.
"You were filled to the gills with alcohol," the judge remarked during the sentencing, highlighting the severity of her actions that could have injured others.
Huger has since addressed her actions and their repercussions publicly. In a video message recorded for the "Real Housewives of Potomac" Season 9 reunion, Huger took responsibility while denying her drinking issue.
"I'm not an alcoholic, let's be clear. I accept full responsibility for everything that went on with my car accident. I don't care about me right now. I care about my children, I care about my family. They are so hurt," she claimed.
According to her attorney, David Martella, Huger is committed to her recovery and is prepared to face the challenges ahead. "She is glad that this part of the process is over. She has been working very hard on her recovery for the past few months and that has allowed her to be the healthiest that she has been in years," Martella said.
Beyond her time in prison, Huger's sentence involves one year of no driving, five years of probation, and the installation of an interlock device on her vehicle upon release. Additionally, she must pay fines amounting to $3,000.
Reflecting on her situation, Huger conveyed remorse and a sense of responsibility to Judge McGann, saying, "It's my responsibility to make sure that my community members make it where they need to be safely."
Huger's future with the "Real Housewives of Potomac" remains uncertain as she dedicates herself to rehabilitation and recovery. Her fans and fellow cast members can only wait and see how this high-profile case will influence both her personal life and her career on the reality show.
