AceShowbiz - Amid a notably weak box office weekend, the Sony release "One of Them Days" emerged victorious, earning $11.6 million from 2,675 theaters. The comedy, starring Keke Palmer and SZA as cash-strapped roommates, edged out Disney's "Mufasa: The Lion King."
With a production budget of just $14 million, "One of Them Days" is projected to recoup its costs by Monday, January 20. The movie marks the first Black female-led theatrical comedy since "Girls Trip" in 2017.
Despite "One of Them Days" success, the overall box office struggled, with the total for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday expected to fall below $80 million, marking one of the worst Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekends since 1997.
"For an individual film like 'One of Them Days,' this was a great weekend," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. "You can still find success stories within what is overall a low-grossing weekend for movie theaters."
Disney's "Mufasa" followed closely in second place with $11.5 million while the Blumhouse horror "Wolf Man" debuted in third place with $10.6 million. Amid mixed reviews, the "Wolf Man," starring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, is expected to reach $12 million by Monday.
"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" and "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera" rounded out the top five with $8.6 million and $6.6 million, respectively.
The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend has historically seen major box office successes, but this year's sluggish performance is expected to improve with the release of "Captain America: Brave New World" and "Paddington in Peru" in February.
