AceShowbiz - In an inspiring display of empathy and generosity, the renowned actor Tom Hardy recently offered to pay £250,000 (approximately $317,000) out of his own pocket to compensate set workers on his new Paramount+ series, "Fixer".
The workers, employed by the construction company Helix 3D, faced the grim possibility of not receiving their wages when their employer went bankrupt despite having completed the sets back in the summer.
The ordeal came to light when a leaked WhatsApp message revealed the company had run out of funds, triggering panic among the 50 crew members who feared they would go unpaid right before the holiday season.
Chris Hudson, a broadcasting union official, expressed deep frustration and concern for the workers in a letter obtained by The London Times. "This close to Christmas, our members are rightly very distressed, with many fearing they will be unable to cover necessities," Hudson wrote. He emphasized the negative impact on the workers' mental health, stating their need to be treated with dignity and respect.
Tom Hardy's response was swift and empathetic. A source close to Hardy confirmed to The London Times that the actor offered to cover the workers' wages, aiming to ease their financial woes just in time for the holidays. "He offered to [pay]," the source noted.
Although Hardy's generous offer was ultimately not required, it drew significant attention to the issue, compelling Paramount and the show's production company, 101 Studios, to fulfill their financial obligations to the contractors.
A Paramount source conveyed to the Times that the studio was "outraged" upon learning about the situation and immediately took necessary steps to resolve the issue. The studio, alongside 101 Studios, ensured that the workers received the payments they were due, thus averting impending financial distress for them.
"Fixer", directed by Guy Ritchie and set to premiere in 2025, follows the intriguing conflict between two globalisting families. Hardy stars as Harry Da Souza, a "fixer" tasked with resolving their disputes. The series also features celebrated actors Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan and is currently being filmed in London.
Tom Hardy's commendable gesture not only highlights his character off-screen but also sheds light on the oft-overlooked struggles behind the scenes. Kudos to both Hardy and Paramount for stepping up and doing the right thing - their actions have provided much-needed relief to many dedicated workers in the entertainment industry.
