In an essay published in The Cut, Jay emotionally reflected on the "public downfall" of her marriage and their subsequent divorce. She recalled moving to London with their two-month-old son while Slater filmed "Wicked", only for him to leave her for Grande after they met on set.

Despite her heartbreak, Jay emphasized that she and Slater are committed to co-parenting their son positively. She also expressed her struggles with postpartum depression and the unfairness of a public divorce.

"I really never thought I would get divorced," Jay wrote. "Especially not just after giving birth to my first child and especially not in the shadow of my husband's new relationship with a celebrity."

However, she found solace in motherhood and vowed to build a "lifetime of sweetness" for herself and her son.

In the wake of her essay, a source close to Slater and Grande said that the couple was "relieved" Jay did not "throw them under the bus." The source added that Jay chose to tell her story on her own terms after facing legal restrictions during their divorce proceedings.

Social media users have since criticized Slater for his "deeply disappointing" treatment of Jay, expressing support for her and questioning the long-term viability of his relationship with Grande.
