AceShowbiz - David Letterman, 77, refuses to slow down. In a recent interview with GQ, the former late-night talk show host declared, "Retirement is a myth. Retirement is nonsense."
Letterman believes that the human body will not allow people to retire. As long as they are healthy, they will always want to produce. "But you know what I'm saying. As long as you are healthy, you still want to produce," he explained. "And you will find ways to, once I stopped doing the show, it took me a couple of years to figure out that, oh, this is a completely different rhythm."
In 2015, Letterman stepped down from his long-running show, "The Late Show", after 33 years. However, he has continued to make appearances and host other shows, such as "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction" on Netflix.
Letterman's comments echo those of other entertainers who have recently spoken out against retirement. Jim Carrey, 62, recently returned to acting after a retirement hiatus, citing financial reasons.
According to a survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, the median retirement age in the United States is 62. However, the transition to retirement can be challenging, and retirees often miss the structure that work provides.
Letterman acknowledges his advanced age and admits that he is unsure how long he can continue working. He recalled a demanding schedule while working on a Netflix show, after which a stage manager suggested he sit up straight. "And I just thought, well, maybe that's a sign. Maybe that's a sign," he said.
Despite his reservations, Letterman remains committed to his craft and believes that he will continue to find ways to produce and make a meaningful impact.
