AceShowbiz - Hollywood is buzzing with excitement following Ridley Scott's accidental reveal that Paul Mescal, star of "Gladiator II", is set to play The Beatles frontman Paul McCartney in an upcoming biopic series directed by Sam Mendes. The confirmation came during a conversation between Scott and Christopher Nolan at a Directors Guild of America screening.
Scott was initially asked about Mescal's involvement in his next film "The Dog Stars". "Paul is actually stacked up, doing the Beatles next," Scott revealed. The series, helmed by Mendes, aims to narrate the story of The Beatles through individual biopics for each band member, McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Although official casting announcements are still pending, Mescal has been the subject of rumors for some time.
The series marks a significant milestone as this is the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and The Beatles have granted the rights to their life stories and music for such a project. Mendes expressed his enthusiasm about the venture, stating that it’s an immense privilege to tell the story of the greatest rock band of all time. "We intend this to be a uniquely thrilling, and epic cinematic experience," he said in a press release, reinforcing the unique storytelling approach of weaving interconnected narratives through the viewpoints of each band member.
Barry Keoghan, star of "Saltburn", has been confirmed by Ringo Starr himself to portray him in the biopics. "I think it's great. I believe he's somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many," Starr humorously commented in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
While speculations about the casting of Lennon and Harrison continue, names like Harris Dickinson and Charlie Rowe have surfaced for those roles. However, the studio has yet to confirm these rumors.
In an interview, Mescal reflected on the opportunity, calling it an incredible story to be part of and voicing his excitement about working with Mendes. "The fact that Sam Mendes is attached to direct, like, truly, it would be a dream come true," he said. Yet, he remained coy about confirming his role.
The biopics are scheduled to release worldwide in 2027, promising to offer fans a comprehensive and detailed look into the lives of the Fab Four. With A-list actors and a director like Mendes, who is known for his work in "American Beauty" and "Skyfall", these films are poised to deliver a cinematic experience worthy of The Beatles' legendary status.
"We had John's voice in our ears," McCartney reminisced about their final single together "Now and Then", which was released in November 2023 and used AI technology to incorporate John Lennon's vocals from a 1970s demo.
