AceShowbiz - Tilda Swinton, renowned for her eclectic roles and captivating performances, suggests that her collaboration with Julianne Moore in the upcoming drama "The Room Next Door" might be her last film. "I've always intended that each film would be my final one," Swinton, 64, revealed in an interview with Elle for their 2024 Women in Hollywood issue. "It was not wanting to jinx anything because I have had such fun from start to finish. I always thought, 'Well, that's a good one to go out on. Let's just quit while we're ahead.' And I feel it today."
Despite her contemplations about retiring, Swinton has already lined up another project. She's set to star in Netflix's "The Ballad of a Small Player" alongside Colin Farrell. According to the streaming giant, the film revolves around "a high-stakes gambler laying low in Macau [who] encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation."
Swinton's illustrious career spans over thirty years and includes an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Michael Clayton" (2007). She has graced an array of notable films such as "Burn After Reading", "The Grand Budapest Hotel" "Snowpiercer" and the "Chronicles of Narnia" series. Her intended retirement would position her among a select group of Oscar winners, including the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis, who have taken steps to retire from acting.
"The Room Next Door" is directed by Pedro Almodovar and features Swinton as Martha, a former war correspondent who reconnects with her old friend Ingrid, portrayed by Julianne Moore, after discovering she has cancer. The film's narrative explores profound themes of mortality and powerlessness. Swinton notes, "The subject really is power. The feeling of powerlessness that we have to engage with around mortality, or, by the way, around aging. We have to get with the program: We are powerless."
Moore, in a joint interview with Swinton, shared a poignant reflection, "A friend of mine died the other day. She's our age and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I said to Tilda, 'I can't believe this happened, we literally just made a movie about this.' So I think the movie is urgent and interesting and human, because this is it. This is what we face, and pretending that we’re not going to die is not going to do us any good."
"The Room Next Door" premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where it received the Golden Lion award. It is set for a limited theatrical release on December 20, with a wider release to follow on January 10, 2025, and nationwide on January 17, 2025. As audiences prepare for its debut, many will watch closely to see if this film indeed marks the end of Tilda Swinton's remarkable journey in the film industry.
