After an illustrious run as one of Hollywood's premier action stars, Liam Neeson announces he may soon step back from the genre that defined the latter part of his career.
- October 24, 2024
AceShowbiz - Liam Neeson, known worldwide for his robust action roles, has hinted at a possible retirement from the genre by 2025. The 72-year-old actor, famously known for his role in "Taken," shared his thoughts on the matter in a recent interview with People magazine.
"Maybe the end of next year. I think that's it," Neeson remarked, reflecting on his prolific career in action films.
Since catapulting to action stardom with "Taken" in 2008, Neeson has become synonymous with intense, high-stakes thrillers. He's headlined a variety of successful action films, including "Unknown," "The Grey," and "Non-Stop."
Even in his early 70s, Neeson continues to perform his own fight scenes, though he admits to seeking assistance from stunt collaborator Mark Vanselow for the more complex maneuvers. "You can't fool audiences. I don't want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me," Neeson said. "I'm 72 - it has to stop at some stage."
Despite his age, Neeson remains a sought-after star, with several upcoming projects in the pipeline. He's set to appear in the action film "Absolution" and has also been cast in "Cold Storage," premiering next year. Neeson will star alongside Zachary Levi in "Hotel Tehran," an action-thriller directed by Guy Moshe, filmed last summer.
However, it's not just action on Neeson's horizon. He's stepping into the comedic arena with a reboot of "The Naked Gun" franchise, set for a July 2025 release. Liam Neeson will take on the role of clueless detective Frank Drebin Jr., originally portrayed by Leslie Nielsen. He will be joined by Pamela Anderson, who will play his love interest in the slapstick series. "It was hard to keep a straight face in scenes together," Anderson mentioned.
While Neeson's comments about retiring from action movies aren't new - he previously hinted at stepping back in both 2015 and 2017 - fans and critics alike can't help but speculate if this time, he means it. Whether or not he retires from action, his impact on the genre is undeniable, and his shift to comedy might just offer a fresh chapter for the beloved actor.
As Neeson considers closing this action-packed chapter, young audiences can look forward to seeing how the ever-evolving actor manages new roles and genres. For now, we can savor each high-octane film he graces us with, knowing the end of an era might soon be upon us.
