AceShowbiz - Liam Payne tried to fight his demons before his passing. Months before his death, the late singer reportedly checked into a rehabilitation center in South West London amid his addiction battles.
It was said that Liam entered The Priory, an addiction and mental health hospital, in late July. The One Direction member, however, only stayed for 2 days before quitting the Addiction Therapy Programme, much to close family and friends' devastation.
"He gave it a go at overcoming his addictions once and for all. He really wanted to get his life on track," a source told The U.S. Sun about the singer, who died after falling from a third floor of a hotel in Argentina on Wednesday, October 16. "All his loved ones were rooting for him."
"There was dismay when he managed just 48 hours of treatment. He bravely sought help but couldn't stay the course," the insider continued.
Liam allegedly told the aides that he wanted to beat his addictions for himself, son Bear, seven, and his family. The 31-year-old signed up to the £5,000-a-night center in South West London and started a strict detox programme. The star, however, skipped classes and began taking chlordiazepoxide, a sedative used to treat symptoms of withdrawing from alcohol and drugs.
"Family and management did everything they could. Liam was loved, adored and incredibly talented. But he just couldn't beat his demons," the insider added.
It was also claimed that last year, his management "begged him not to drive, it was dangerous." The source elaborated, "Loved ones hid his keys but he just bought another car. There is some solace in his loved ones knowing he was aware how much everyone was rooting for him. He confronted his issues head-on, hoping to get back on track."
In the wake of Liam's death, his dad Geoff Payne was seen visiting the CasaSur Palermo Hotel, the hotel in Argentina where his son died, on Friday. He solemnly walked around the makeshift memorial fans have created on the sidewalk in front of the hotel.
Geoff was seen looking at all the flowers, letters and candles placed by fans around a tree near the hotel. He later spent around 8 minutes walking around the tree that has become a makeshift altar over the past few evenings.
