AceShowbiz - At a Berlin Film Festival Q&A for the upcoming drama thriller "A Different Man", Sebastian Stan addressed a journalist's question about the transformation of his character, Edward, from a man with facial disfigurement to a "perfect man" after reconstructive surgery. The reporter used the term "beast" to describe Edward before his surgery, prompting Stan to respond.
"I am gonna call you out a bit on the choice of words there, because I think part of why the film is important is because we often don't have maybe even the right vocabulary," Stan said. "I think it's a little more complex than that, and obviously there's language barriers and so on, but you know, 'beast' isn't the word I think."
Stan explained that the film explores preconceived ideas and the lack of education around facial disfigurements. He emphasized that the reporter's interpretation was subjective and that viewers should strive for an objective perspective when experiencing the movie to challenge their initial instincts.
In the film, Stan plays Edward, who becomes obsessed with an actor, Oswald (played by Adam Pearson), who portrays him in a stage play based on his life. Pearson has neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes benign tumors to grow on nerve tissue, and has advocated against bullying people with disfigurements.
Stan's comments were praised by fans and critics alike, with many commending him for his polite and eloquent defense of his colleague. "A Different Man" is set to release in theaters on September 20.
