AceShowbiz - Shailene Woodley is set to star in a biopic of Janis Joplin, which has received $2.5 million in funding from the California Film Commission. The film is one of 19 projects to receive a total of $51.6 million in tax credits from the state.
Woodley will produce the movie and star as Joplin, who died in 1970 at the age of 27. The film will shoot in California over 30 days, with a budget of approximately $10 million. Woodley believes the city is the perfect place to capture the authenticity and truth of Joplin's life.
The Joplin biopic is one of many that have been attempted over the years, but none have come to fruition. Actresses including Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, and Pink have been previously attached to play Joplin on screen.
The California Film Commission also awarded $12 million to the "Suits L.A." series to keep it filming in Los Angeles. The show moved its filming to Vancouver for the pilot episode, where it received generous tax incentives. However, California lured the show back with tax credits from its $150 million program designed to encourage the construction of more soundstages.
Among the other projects receiving tax credits are "Community - The Movie," with $3.3 million; "Killing Gawker," with $2.5 million; and "Lullaby," a Disney feature film, with $3.5 million.
Woodley, who is an Emmy-nominated actress known for her roles in "Big Little Lies," "Ferrari," and "Dumb Money," says that Joplin's story resonates with her. She believes that bringing Joplin's story to life will create opportunities and funding for the city and people that were so important to her.
