AceShowbiz - During a press screening at the Venice Film Festival for his upcoming movie "Wolfs", George Clooney broke his silence on President Joe Biden's decision to step aside as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential race. This comes after Clooney's controversial New York Times op-ed calling for Biden to withdraw.
"I've never had to answer that question, so I suppose I'll do it here," said Clooney as the room erupted in applause. "The person who should be applauded is the president, who did the most selfless thing that anybody's done since George Washington," Clooney remarked. "All the machinations that got us there, none of that's gonna be remembered and it shouldn't be. What should be remembered is the selfless act of someone who... You know, it's very hard to let go of power. We've seen it all around the world. And for someone to say, 'I think there's a better way forward,' all the credit goes to him, and that's really the truth."
In his op-ed, Clooney raised concerns about Biden's age and ability to lead the Democratic Party to victory. "The Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe 'big f**king deal' Biden of 2010," he wrote. "He wasn't even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate." He expressed the opinion that "every single" Democratic senator and congress member shared his sentiment that Biden wouldn't win the upcoming election.
Biden officially announced his withdrawal on July 21 and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. "My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my vice president, and it's been the best decision I've made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year," Biden announced.
Clooney and several other Hollywood figures, including Stephen King, Rob Reiner, Michael Moore, John Cusack and Michael Douglas, expressed similar concerns. The actor also acknowledged that Biden's decision would overshadow any criticism or controversy that led to it. "All the rest of it will be long gone and forgotten," he stated at the Venice press conference.
Speaking to CNN, Clooney praised Biden's move as a demonstration of true leadership. "President Biden has shown what true leadership is," he said. "He's saving democracy once again. We're all so excited to do whatever we can to support Vice President Harris in her historic quest."
In an election where every decision can tip the scales, Clooney's stance and Biden's selfless act may well define the Democratic Party's strategy moving forward.
