AceShowbiz - Meryl Streep's team has broken their silence on Martin Short dating rumors, which were just reignited following their appearance at the "Only Murders in the Building" season 4 premiere. A representative for the actress has debunked the romance rumors, insisting that "they are just friends."
The rep was forced to issue the denial after Meryl and Martin's "sweet and cute" display at the show's premiere party only added fuel to the romance rumors. The two acting legends were holding hands on the red carpet during the August 22 event on the Paramount lot in Hollywood.
Spies later told Page Six that their close friendship was evident inside the party too. Their chemistry off camera led one insider at the party to believe, "It's gotta be more than a 'showmance.' There is definitely something there."
According to the eyewitness, the "OMITB" co-stars were glued to the hip the whole night. Martin reportedly was "attentive" when they were together. "They walked in holding hands, and were in great spirits, laughing. It was very sweet and cute," the source dished, but added that they left the party separately.
The dating speculation between Martin and Meryl began at the 2024 Golden Globes when the two appeared exceptionally comfortable with each other, prompting fans to take to social media with enthusiastic well-wishes and heated discussions. One particularly excited fan noted on X, formerly known as Twitter, "Are Meryl Streep and Martin Short dating … because if that's true … that's like Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner multiplied by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft …."
Later, Martin addressed his relationship with Meryl in an episode of "Club Random with Bill Maher", stating, "We are just very close friends." Following the "OMITB" event, he gushed about his "love" for the three-time Oscar-winning actress.
"I think a friendship always grows if you work with someone and love that person," the 74-year-old comedian told Extra during a sit-down with co-stars Selena Gomez and Steve Martin. While he didn't "want to reveal too much of what happens" between their characters, Selena chimed in by calling their bond "so sweet."
